Position Summary
The Custodian ensures that the Church and Parish Centre's mechanical and electrical systems are properly maintained, buildings kept clean and the grounds well maintained. The Custodian collaborates with the Business Manager regarding event rentals. The Custodian will coordinate with volunteers and staff to ensure a safe and clean environment.
Responsibilities:
Ensures the mechanical systems (heating, air conditioning, ventilation, plumbing and electrical) for the church and parish centre are properly maintained including:
Conducts preventative maintenance on an ongoing basis.
Completes minor repairs as needed.
Recruits or assists volunteers, staff or trades people as required.
Assists in maintaining the church’s sound system, computer projection systems and security equipment.
Coordinates external trades people as required in collaboration with the Business Manager.
Ensures all facilities are kept clean including:
Vacuuming church interior weekly or more often as needed.
Cleans sacristy and parish centre washrooms as required.
Remove and sort garbage and recyclables.
Thoroughly cleans the church (e.g., pews, floors, wood as required).
Conducts seasonal cleaning as needed.
Strips and finishes the floors in the church and parish centre.
Coordinates the cleaning of carpets as needed.
Ensures the church grounds are well maintained including:
Cuts and trims grass weekly, prunes trees and shrubs as needed.
Oversees and assists with the maintenance of the garden areas including reviewing the work of volunteers and landscape contractors.
Oversees the snow removal and plowing contract and contractor.
Clear snow as needed.
Maintains and repairs equipment (mowers, snow blower, etc.).
Collaborates with the Business Manager and other parish staff regarding bookings and set up for events.
Set priorities and manage workload with the Business Manager.
Orders and manages stock of supplies including cleaning, candles, wine and kitchen.
The custodian may encounter security issues and must evaluate and handle the situation which may include dealing with the police.
Responds to building and property issues outside of regular work hours including alarms and security calls.
Advises the Business Manager of required capital and maintenance expenditures.
All other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications:
Experience in maintaining buildings and property.
Knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems.
Knowledge of preventive maintenance.
Knowledge of government regulations (WHIMIS, Fire Code, Health regulations, etc.)
Experience with ensuring a safe work environment.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Ability to work in a faith-based work environment.
Ability to converse in both English and Spanish would be an asset.
Accountability:
The Custodian is accountable to the Business Manager. The Custodian is an employee of the Diocese of London and adheres to relevant Diocesan policies and procedures.
Hours of Work:
8:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday through Friday with a ½ hour unpaid lunch for a total of 37.5 hours weekly. Some evening work as required. Overtime work may be necessary but needs to be managed. Lieu time will be used to absorb any overtime work.
Salary Range:
The employee is advised of the salary range for the position during the hiring process. The salary range is set by the Diocese of London for the position. Movement along the range is dependent on a satisfactory annual performance appraisal.
