Position: Full-time Custodian Work Location: Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, 422 Elgin Street Wallaceburg ON N8A 3C1 and Holy Family Parish, 647 Murray Street Wallaceburg ON N8A 1W1 Commitment: 40 hours per week (example: 8 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday) - willingness and ability to work evenings and weekends is required. Compensation: $20 to $23 an hour based on experience. This position is eligible for participation in the Diocese of London’s lay staff benefit and pension plans. POSITION SUMMARY Reporting to the Business Manager, the Full-Time Custodian at Our Lady Help of Christians Parish, Wallaceburg and Holy Family Parish, Wallaceburg within the Kent Lambton Roman Catholic Family of Parishes is a critical component of the parish staff and provides an important contribution towards the spiritual life of the parishioners through ensuring the timely caretaking, maintenance, cleaning and safety of our places of worship and offices.
SUMMARY OF DUTIES:
Cleans and maintains all buildings including the church, offices, meeting rooms, washroom facilities, other common areas, and the church exterior.
Ensures cleanliness of Our Lady Help of Christians Parish and Holy Family Parish and halls, both inside and outside.
Orders cleaning and washroom supplies and ensures an adequate inventory of supplies.
Maintains inventories for church and hall and reports to the office for reordering (e.g., hosts, altar wine, hall/washroom supplies).
Collects garbage and recycling and places it in the bin for pickup or recycling.
Ensures the facilities are in good working order.
Responsible for minor repairs and operational activities within the church, hall, and rectory
Ensures that heating and cooling systems are operational.
Maintains grounds of both church sites and rectory (e.g., cutting and trimming grass, snow removal).
Shovels snow and apply de-icing agents to sidewalks and emergency exits as required.
Prepares and works to ensure a regular preventative maintenance schedule for all equipment.
Sets up/takes down chairs and tables for parish functions, rentals, and events as coordinated by the Manager or Pastor.
Works with volunteers when necessary to set up for special events (e.g., Easter Celebrations, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Dove of Peace).
Identifies areas requiring major repairs and reports the same to the Pastor/Business Manager (e.g., roof, doors, equipment, etc.).
As approved by the Manager or Pastor, engages external companies/contractors to perform services as needed (e.g., plumber, electrician, heating/cooling).
Collaborates with other staff members at the churches within the Family of Parishes as needed.
Other duties of a similar nature as assigned by the Pastor or Business Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
Secondary school diploma or equivalent.
Previous custodial or maintenance experience preferred.
Prior experience in industrial or office building cleaning and property maintenance.
Prior hands-on experience operating industrial floor polishers and/or floor cleaning machines is an asset.
Prior experience operating riding mower and/or yard maintenance equipment is an asset.
Mechanical knowledge for minor repairs (e.g., plumbing, electrical, HVAC, drywall, painting).
Strong applied knowledge of and experience safely handling cleaning chemicals and equipment.
Ability to maintain and follow hall/church setups both individually and with others.
Experience working with volunteers; strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively within a team.
Strong communication and collaboration skills with a focus on customer service; proven ability to listen to and consider suggestions and feedback graciously.
Self-motivated, proactive, and capable of working independently with excellent attention to detail regarding cleanliness.
Creative problem solver with a positive, action-oriented attitude and high level of personal integrity.
Ability and willingness to perform manual physical labour both indoors and outdoors.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Ability and willingness to work flexible hours based on event schedules, including weekends and evenings (e.g., snow removal, special setups).
Access to a reliable personal vehicle for transportation between sites.
Professional representative of the Diocese of London at all times with an understanding of and desire to support and promote its mission
A police record check as deemed suitable by the Diocese of London will be required of the successful candidate.
